The major aim of the AKR|SDR Research Group is preparation and characterization of human carbonyl reducing enzymes. Special attention is paid to membrane-bound reductases from short chain dehydrogenases/reductases (SDR) and aldo-keto reductases (AKR) superfamilies. Carbonyl group, the target of reduction catalyzed by SDR, MDR and AKR superfamilies, is present in endogenous substances, as well as in various groups of drugs, e.g. antineoplastics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Conversion of this group can lead to the loss of therapeutic effect and/or to the increase of toxicity for organism.
